The Overland

Our flight back home on the 11th is from Melbourne so we have to leave Adelaide for Melbourne and this time we decided to take a train. The train that goes to Melbourne (runs only on Mondays and Wednesdays) is the Overland. The journey is supposed to take about eleven hours but ours took longer... It set off on time, at 7.40 am; we nearly missed it though because well, firstly we took about 20 minutes looking for the car keys, and then Banglong drove us to the wrong station! We just assumed that the train will take off from the station in the city and since Banglong has never sent anyone on the Overland before, he confidently drove us there and left for work.. We asked about the train and the gentleman at the Information directed us to another station which is about 5 minutes away. We then rushed outside, grabbed a taxi and after, I don't know, it seemed like eternity, we arrived at the correct station in Keswick (cost us  'bet $10).
The platform where we were directed to was almost empty except for those seeing other people off and the door to our coach was already locked.. and unlocked for us while the person who unlocked it for us muttered, "This is why we required passengers to be here an hour before departure..bla bla!" Alhamdulillah, we made it on time and a couple of minutes to spare as there seemed to be other passengers who didn't make it on time.
Anyway, we made ourselves comfortable; the seat was cushy enough with ample leg-room. There was also a 'coach attendant' (like the flight attendant..) who welcomed the passengers and told us where the restroom, cafe and emergency exits are and so on. Then the 'train manager' (not the train driver, I might add) was over the intercom welcoming us again and giving us some information on the stops and reminding us to hit the red button after entering the restroom or we might be caught with our pants down..(she's quite hilarious). She was also very apologetic when the train was delayed due to some track-work being done and kept blaming the people responsible for the track-work not done on time.. Anyway, the eventual 12-hour journey was quite uneventful (except for the delays) and rather pleasant, enjoying the scenery, reading and napping on and off. We reached Melbourne around 7.45 pm..
Below are pics from the journey:

Saying good-bye - Umayr upset because he wants to go on the plane (he knows Jed and Jedda are going back to Malaysia on a plane)

Crabbing!

Yesterday we went crabbing. Set out quite early in the morning as we have to be there at high tide. It didn't take very long to get to Semaphore Jetty but we stopped for a few minutes at the Sunday Market (Jack Cross) to buy bait. It was rather cold on the jetty and pretty windy but the thought of having crabs for dinner urged us on.. We caught quite a lot; about 10 or so but we had to throw back save 3 because of the size (sigh...). Here are some pics of the day we went crabbing:

Set to go with bucket and 'cage'
Grandad made sure little Ammar is belted up properly for the drive
Stopped by Jack Cross for bait
Arrived at Semaphore
The walk to the end of the jetty
Holding on to our tudungs...pretty windy!
Clean white beach
Ammar enjoying the windy walk..
Welcoming sign
Make sure your catch is the right size..
Preparing the 'cage'
Father and sons moment..
..while mom is busy putting 'blacan' on the bait which is 'ikan kembung' (or Jack mackerel as they're call here) The 'blacan' is supposed to make the bait more attractive to the crabs but we found out they aren't that fussy..
Throwing the 'cage' with the bait into the sea
Some interesting throwing styles..
Another one.. don't jump into the sea, dear!
Caught one!
Umayr helping grandad with the catch
Wow, that's a big one MasyAllah!
Struggling to get away..
Caught 2 already!
This one's too small so back into the sea you go!
Even though there's no catch, the bait is half gone. We went through $6 worth of bait (about 10 or so mackerel). Hmm..looks like we were actually feeding the crabs, lol
This old guy is a professional.. (he even has a plastic apron on)
Showing off his catch. Told me he has a large family (of 15) waiting for him to bring crabs for dinner. And he actually caught 15 crabs..lucky man
Highlight of the morning..we spotted a seal
Probably ate our bait..
Started to rain..hurried back home!
Yummy..'masak lemak ketam dengan nenas' (crab cooked with coconut milk, chillies, turmeric and pineapple). The 3 crabs brought home were more than enough for our meal, Alhamdulillah!

'Cockling' in Goolwa

I think it's not too late to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I'm wishing that in 2012 I will lead a healthier and active lifestyle (yes, yes hubby, I'll go for that morning walk with you!) and to update my blog regularly at least once a week (OMG, are those new year resolutions? because I don't do new year resolutions; I do new day resolutions..).
Well, we're still in Adelaide, literally 'baking' in the heat wave that's hitting this part of Australia these last few days - temperatures soaring past 40 degrees at times. (some roads are melting and it's said to be the hottest in over a hundred years.. and we had to be here right now..sigh..). We're staying indoors most of the times, hugging the air conditioner and showering now and then to keep cool...
Anyway, on the last day of 2011, it was just starting to scorch but we were set to go 'cockling' ie. digging for cockles or pipies as they are referred to over here (cockles are 'kerang' in Malay but they're not actually 'kerang' though they're also called Goolwa cockles which might clear up some of the differences).  We decided to wait until after 'asr which was about 5.30 pm before setting out for the hour journey to Goolwa beach.  Although we slathered ourselves with sun-screen before setting off, Alhamdulillah it started to get a bit cooler by the time we arrived at the beach. The locals don't seem to care much to dig for these delicacies but there was an Asian-looking family digging as well then.. and below are some pics of the quest (and bounty)!

Turn right for Goolwa..
Vineyard part of the way
Also an Alpaca farm..
Bang Long and his family
At Goolwa beach - grand-dad set to dig cockles
Giving grandsons a ride in the bucket to fill up with cockles
Father and son digging excitedly..
..while grandson splashed in the warm sea
Cockles harvested after 'bet two airs..'
The next day - cleaned and ready for the pot.. (daughter-in-law cooked them into 'sambal' and 'masak lemak')
We got home quite late or we'd have gone out to see the firework display celebrating the new year..
